The Junior League of Johnson City hosted its second annual Cocktails & Catwalks fundraiser to raise funds for projects benefiting children at the Johnson City Public Library. Proceeds from the event enabled the Junior League to donate $20,000.00 to the library for improvements to the children’s outdoor amphitheater.
This event had the perfect conditions for a photographer. The Belk store was brightly lit with wide spaces. Supplemental flash was completely unnecessary. While a speedlight is often required indoors, it is not my first choice. One can bounce flash and diffuse it, but in the end, the pictures look like flash pictures. I had plenty of bright, widespread light which made for lots of color and pop.
Event organizers want a collection of pictures for memories, for planning repeat events, and for publicity. As an event photographer, I try to be cognizant of passing time, knowing I can only be in one place at a time, and that some photo-ops pass in an instant, never to happen again. It is a challenge in which I revel as I strive to come away with at least one picture of each participant and a set that well represents the spirit and history of the event.
